Father Shoots Would-Be Carjacker Dead in Texas Standoff
A father fatally shot Jose Ramirez, a 30-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, more than 10 times during an attempted carjacking in Dallas on Sunday afternoon, police said. The incident began around 3:30 p.m. when Ramirez caused a collision involving two vehicles, then fled to a nearby petrol station where he tried to seize a white Chevrolet Impala occupied by the man, his family, and several children.
Surveillance footage showed Ramirez confronting the driver and attempting to take control of the vehicle, prompting a physical struggle as family members, including a young boy, exited and fled to safety. The father, who was legally armed, discharged his firearm during the confrontation, striking Ramirez multiple times. Ramirez was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
The father remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and surrendered his weapon to Garland police, who confirmed he is not expected to face criminal charges. Authorities classified the shooting as an act of self-defense under Texas law. Ramirez was not a resident of Garland and his entry point into the U.S. remains unknown.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to firearm ownership rights and illegal immigration policies in Texas, where 'stand-your-ground' laws permit the use of lethal force in perceived self-defense situations. No charges have been filed against the driver, and the investigation remains open. The police have released surveillance video and are awaiting further forensic analysis.
