A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321neo aborted takeoff at Denver International Airport on Thursday night after striking a person who had breached airport security and entered an active runway, according to air traffic control audio and airport officials. The incident occurred around 11:19 p.m. local time, prompting an emergency stop, an engine fire, and evacuation of all passengers and crew onto the runway.
The individual, whose identity has not been released, jumped over a perimeter fence before entering the runway area, airport authorities confirmed. Audio recordings captured the pilot informing air traffic control: "Tower, Frontier 4345, we're stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody... we have an engine fire." Ground personnel later reported visible human remains on the runway, including dismembered limbs.
FlightAware data shows the aircraft was traveling at approximately 149 mph at the time of impact. Passenger accounts described a loud explosion, flames from the left engine, and thick smoke in the cabin. One passenger reported his son witnessed human legs inside the spinning engine. The National Transportation Safety Board and Transportation Security Administration have launched an investigation into the security lapse and operational response.
Frontier Airlines issued a statement saying it is coordinating with authorities and safety agencies, expressing sorrow over the incident. "We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. We are deeply saddened by this event," the airline said.
Denver police are investigating the circumstances of the individual's access to the runway, while federal agencies will assess compliance with airport security protocols. The runway remained closed Friday morning, and the aircraft was towed for forensic examination. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with preliminary findings expected within days.
