Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant of Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by unknown assailants in North 24 Parganas' Madhyamgram on May 6, 2026, and the killers are still at large. Police have recovered a second motorbike used by the killers to escape and are investigating possible connections to local criminals.
The murder is part of a larger wave of post-poll violence that has swept West Bengal since the election results were declared on May 4, 2026, with incidents of arson, vandalism, and clashes reported from multiple parts of the state.
Crude bomb blasts were reported from the Panihati constituency, injuring at least five BJP workers, and blasts were also reported from Howrah's Sibpur area, with visuals of the incidents going viral on social media.
The police have collected CCTV footage from the crime scene and are investigating possible connections to the killers, with one unit of the Special Investigation Team tracing connections in Uttar Pradesh. The ADG CID and the DG of BSF have inspected the scene of the crime, and the police are working to apprehend the killers.
The immediate outlook is for continued investigation into the murder and the post-poll violence, with the police working to restore order and stability in the affected areas. The court will likely hear cases related to the violence in the coming days, and official responses from the state government are expected to address the ongoing situation.
