eBay's spokesperson told AFP on Wednesday that the company will cut 1,000 jobs in a second round of layoffs, trimming its workforce by nine percent. The announcement followed an initial round in February that eliminated 800 positions, bringing total headcount to 12,300.
The move comes after a year of sluggish growth; eBay’s revenue had plateaued in 2024, but a rebound in 2025 prompted the board to realign resources. A $1.2 billion purchase of Depop in July and a rejected bid from GameStop’s Ryan Cohen earlier this year underline the company’s push to stay competitive in the second‑hand market.
Employees in San Jose will receive severance packages and career‑transition support, the spokesperson said. The company emphasized that the layoffs would be handled with care and respect, a promise echoed by senior HR executive Maya Patel in a brief statement to the press.
The cuts will take effect in the coming weeks, as eBay prepares to streamline operations and concentrate on its core e‑commerce platform. Investors are watching closely, as the company aims to maintain profitability while navigating a volatile market.
