Giraffe Dies at Bannerghatta Biological Park Due to Caecal Torsion

A female giraffe named Shivani died at the Bannerghatta Biological Park on Thursday, according to a statement from the park. The giraffe, aged about three years and ten months, stopped eating from May 3 and despite receiving the best possible veterinary care, succumbed to caecal torsion on May 7.
The park authorities conducted a postmortem and collected visceral samples, which have been sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals laboratory for further examination.
Shivani was shifted from Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in February 2024.
The park will likely release further details on the incident after receiving the laboratory examination report, and the incident is expected to be reviewed by wildlife experts in the coming days.
