The Karnataka Forest Department has received approximately 2,300 objections from citizens, environmental groups, and activists opposing a proposal to fell 561 trees in Mysuru for National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) highway development projects. The deadline for public submissions ended Thursday, with Deputy Conservator of Forests Paramesh confirming the volume of responses and stating they are now under review.
The proposed tree removal covers multiple locations including Bannimantap Road, Nanjangud Road, Fountain Road, and Hunsur Road, with around 350 trees marked at the Manipal Hospital flyover site. Species listed for felling include Indian rosewood, rain tree, honge, Akasha Mallige, mahogany, mango, and neem. Officials will document each tree's species, girth, and condition before finalizing recommendations.
Several organizations, including Mysore Grahakara Parishat and Parisarakkagi Navu, have urged authorities to explore alternative alignments and engineering solutions to avoid deforestation. Some submissions recommend transplanting trees instead of felling them, while others demand a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment and the revival of Mysuru’s dormant Tree Authority.
The Forest Department is compiling a detailed report based on the public feedback and technical assessment, which will be submitted to the state government for final approval. The department has approached the process with heightened caution following widespread protests over the felling of 40 trees on Hyder Ali Road in 2025.
