A 15‑year‑old former pupil entered Leszczydol‑Nowiny primary school at about 0700 GMT, brandishing three knives, and struck a 37‑year‑old caretaker, killing her and injuring a principal and a teacher. Police spokesperson Katarzyna Kucharska told TVN24 that the caretaker was the first victim and that the principal and teacher suffered wounds but survived. The attacker, a former pupil, is now enrolled in a vocational school.
This attack follows a Wednesday incident in which a 19‑year‑old student wounded 10 people, including himself, at a different primary school. Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka said the motive remains unclear and that the suspect was detained immediately. The second assault marks the second school shooting in Poland in just two days.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency cabinet meeting after the Leszczydol‑Nowiny attack, according to Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski, who also reported detaining a 17‑year‑old in Sierpc who had posted online threats and carried two knives. The police seized the knives and recovered digital evidence of searches for how to orchestrate violent events.
Prosecutors will review the case and police are tightening security across schools nationwide. An emergency briefing is set for next week to assess the broader implications of the surge in school violence.
