Vijay’s TVK Secures 35% Vote Share in Debut, Falls Short of Majority in Tamil Nadu

Actor C. Joseph Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured approximately 35.11% of the vote in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, falling short of an absolute majority despite a performance that surpassed nearly all pre-election forecasts. The result, declared on April 23, 2026, stunned political observers and psephologists, with one stating that findings from a private survey were withheld due to their implausibility in the pre-poll environment.
The TVK’s vote share exceeds the 30.4% that M.G. Ramachandran’s AIADMK secured in 1977, when it won power with 130 seats through an alliance with the CPI(M) and AIFB. In contrast, the TVK contested independently and did not secure a majority, despite matching the AIADMK’s 1977 vote share in contested constituencies—35.36%—and drawing massive youth support, particularly in southern districts like Virudhunagar and Madurai.
The rise of TVK reflects growing voter fatigue with the traditional Dravidian parties, the DMK and AIADMK, and follows failed attempts by other figures—including Vijayakant, Kamal Haasan, and Seeman—to establish a viable third force. The BJP’s decline in Tamil Nadu after winning zero seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls created political space that Vijay’s party rapidly filled through mass appeal and rallies, though no formal post-poll alliance has yet been announced.
Political analysts note that Vijay had previously indicated openness to pre-poll alliances, a strategy not pursued in 2026. With no single party securing a majority, coalition negotiations are expected to begin within days. The Election Commission will release the full seat distribution on April 25, 2026, after which party leaders are scheduled to meet with Governor R.N. Ravi.
