The first 20-metric-tonne consignment of honey from Assam's Baksa district was exported to the United States on May 9, 2026, under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, marking a significant step in India's agricultural export diversification, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. The shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and executed by APEDA-registered exporter M/s Salt Range Foods Pvt Ltd.
Baksa, an aspirational district in Assam, was identified under ODOP for its high honey production potential, with the produce sourced from eco-friendly, pesticide-free environments known for near-organic quality. The region's indigenous communities, including the Karbi, Mishing and Bodo tribes, have traditionally engaged in honey collection for food, medicine and cultural use, according to the ministry.
In fiscal year 2023–24, Assam produced approximately 1,650 metric tonnes of honey, with major output from districts in the Bodoland Territorial Region. APEDA supported the export by helping set up processing infrastructure and supplying testing equipment to meet international food safety standards.
The government said the export is expected to improve price realisation for local farmers by nearly 43% compared to local market rates, enhancing rural livelihoods. APEDA will continue supporting capacity building and market linkages for honey producers in Aspirational Districts.
