Telangana Reports Zero Farmer Suicides in 2024, But Overall Suicide Rate Rises: NCRB Data
Telangana reported zero suicides among farmers in 2024, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, marking a decline from 56 such deaths in 2023 and 898 in 2014 at the time of the state's formation. The NCRB data, compiled from police reports across states, used both the Indian Penal Code and the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for recording suicides. Nationally, 10,546 persons engaged in the farming sector died by suicide in 2024, down from 10,786 in 2023.
The state recorded 10,975 total suicides in 2024, a 3.7% increase from 10,580 in 2023, with the suicide rate rising from 27.7 to 28.6 per lakh population—the second highest among large states, behind Kerala's 30.2. Maharashtra reported the highest number of total suicides at 22,174 (13% of the national total), followed by Tamil Nadu with 15,491 (11.7%). Sikkim had the highest rate at 36.3 per lakh, while Bihar recorded the lowest at 1 per lakh.
Rural areas accounted for the majority of suicides in Telangana, with only 711 deaths—7.9% of the state's total—occurring in Hyderabad, up from 659 in 2023. The NCRB cited family problems as the leading cause, accounting for 4,675 cases (42.6%), followed by illness (2,209 cases) and financial difficulties (1,313 cases). Two deaths were linked to hero worship and 25 to property disputes.
The national suicide rate declined slightly from 12.3 to 12.2 per lakh population. Telangana was among seven states that reported an increase in suicides in 2024 despite the overall national decline of 0.4%. The government has continued to promote suicide prevention helplines, including Roshini, which operates 24/7 with contact numbers 8142020033/44 and 040 66202000/2001.
The NCRB data will inform ongoing mental health and agrarian welfare policy reviews, with state and central officials expected to convene in June to assess suicide prevention strategies.
