Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday (May 11, 2026) dismissed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for citizens to avoid purchasing gold and undertaking foreign travel as a sign of the central government's economic failure. Speaking to reporters at his residence in Hyderabad, Reddy said the appeal reflected the 'complete failure' of the Modi administration and revealed its inability to manage the country's economic and foreign policy challenges.
Reddy attributed rising economic hardship to what he called the inexperience and arrogance of the BJP-led Union government. He claimed the Centre lacked a coherent foreign policy and was diverting attention from its shortcomings through public appeals. Citing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he said warnings about current crises had been raised earlier by the Opposition.
The Chief Minister called for an all-party meeting and urged the central government to accept suggestions from opposition parties. He criticized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that nearly 90 lakh names were deleted in West Bengal and the process was being selectively enforced in states where the BJP sought political advantage.
Reddy also mocked the BJP's election strategies, comparing them to a 'Gemini Circus,' and noted the party's limited success in southern states, winning only three seats in Kerala and two in Tamil Nadu. He claimed the SIR process failed in Kerala due to strong Congress presence, allowing the BJP to succeed only in states with weak Congress organizations.
The Telangana government has not announced any formal action, but Reddy said the central government must shift from public appeals to policy correction. The remarks come amid growing political debate over economic conditions and electoral processes ahead of the national elections.
