Karnataka Sees Decline in Overall Crime, but Rise in Crimes Against Seniors

Karnataka recorded 1,98,331 cognisable crimes in 2024, down 7.4% from 2,14,234 cases in 2023, according to the NCRB report. However, crimes against senior citizens rose to 4,247 cases in 2024, a 130% increase from 1,840 cases in 2023.
Bengaluru reported 34,715 IPC/BNS crimes in 2024, with 9,229 theft cases, 176 murder cases, and 3,477 economic offences. The city also saw a rise in crimes against senior citizens, with 660 cases in 2024, and a decline in juvenile crime, with 386 cases in 2024.
The NCRB report highlighted Bengaluru's high crime rate against women, with 4,748 cases in 2024, and a significant number of crimes against children, with 2,026 cases in 2024.
The Karnataka government and Bengaluru police have launched initiatives to address these issues, including the Mane Manege Police program to monitor senior citizens. The city police will continue to focus on improving safety and reducing crime rates, with the NCRB data serving as a guide for future law enforcement strategies. The next step will be for the authorities to analyze the report's findings and implement targeted measures to address the rising crimes against seniors and women.
