President Droupadi Murmu announced a major gubernatorial reshuffle on Monday, appointing Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as governor of Tamil Nadu and reassigning six other state leaders to new posts. The move was announced at the Rashtrapati Bhavan communique and will take effect when each appointee assumes office.
Arlekar, who has served as governor of Kerala, will be succeeded in that state by former Sikkim governor Om Prakash Mathur. Mathur will take over the Kerala post on the date he assumes charge. In Sikkim, Dushyant Gautam, a senior BJP leader from Uttarakhand, will replace Mathur as governor. Braj Mohan Ram, a veteran politician from Jharkhand, will become the new governor of Odisha. Sudha Yadav, a former minister, will take office in Karnataka, while Dhal Singh Bisen will be sworn in as governor of Uttarakhand.
The President’s authority to appoint governors is a constitutional function that allows the central government to manage state administration. Such reshuffles are routinely used to bring fresh leadership or to align state governance with national priorities. The appointments follow the pattern of rotating governors after a few years in office.
The announcements came as the national government prepares for the upcoming state elections, where governor appointments can influence political dynamics. State governments are expected to welcome the new appointees and smooth the transition.
All new governors will formally assume office on the dates they are sworn in, marking the official start of their tenure.
