Baltersan Castle, a roofless L‑plan towerhouse that has stared at the Ayrshire sky for over four centuries, re‑appears on the market with an asking price of £120,000. The property sits on 0.75 acres just 10 miles from Ayr and 45 miles from Glasgow, and its original fireplaces, staircases and window openings remain intact.
Built in 1584 by John Kennedy of Pennyglen and his wife, Margaret Cathcart, the castle held its own for nearly two hundred years before being deserted mid‑18th century. Despite that long period of abandonment, the structure has preserved much of its original masonry, floor levels and roof geometry, earning Category A listing status for its national architectural significance.
The towerhouse has attracted cultural curiosity over the years: Charles Rennie Mackintosh sketched its silhouette in 1895, while renowned poets Robert Burns and John Keats were known to have visited the site. In 2024, the castle surfaced again in the news when Italian engineer Angelo Ovidi purchased it with plans for a £2 million restoration, only to let the project stall as planning consent expired.
Selling agent Galbraith describes the sale as an “exceptional” opportunity, but the expired consent means any buyer must apply anew for rebuilding and conversion permits before any work can begin. The next step will involve a fresh planning application, after which a potential owner could launch the long‑awaited restoration of this historic landmark.
