The KSRTC bus was on its scheduled route from Gangavathi to Kolhapur via Belagavi when it slammed into the rear of a tipper truck on NH48 near Sankeshwar, Hukkeri taluk, Belagavi District.
The impact left the driver dead at the scene, while 12 passengers sustained injuries ranging from fractures to cuts.
Emergency responders transported the wounded to Sankeshwar Taluk Hospital for immediate care, and paramedics attended to the bus and the truck at the site.
Police have opened a formal inquiry into the crash, citing possible road conditions and driver fatigue as areas of focus.
The incident follows a string of transportation mishaps in Karnataka, including a private sleeper bus fire in Sagar taluk that destroyed 80% of the vehicle but spared its occupants, and a training aircraft emergency landing in Kalaburagi that left both crew members unharmed.
Officials expect a detailed police report within the next 48 hours, and the KSRTC plans to dispatch a safety audit team to review the affected stretch of NH48.
