The Telangana government, led by Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and Labour Minister G. Vivek, has confirmed its resolve to revive the Tummidihatti barrage project. The government will soon engage in talks with the Maharashtra government to move forward with the proposal, which involves constructing a 150-meter-high barrage across the Pranahita river at Tummidihatti in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district.
The project, initially designed to irrigate 16 lakh acres at an estimated cost of ₹38,500 crore, was put on hold after the previous government changed the barrage site to Medigadda and constructed the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP).
Minister Rao urged Union Ministers, MPs, and MLAs from the BJP to convince the Maharashtra government to support the project and to take it up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the state on May 10.
The Telangana government has expressed its willingness to provide compensation for land loss due to the project, which is expected to increase the groundwater table and benefit both states.
The court is not involved in this matter, but the Maharashtra government's response to the upcoming talks will be crucial in determining the project's future. The Telangana government will likely await the outcome of these talks before deciding on the next course of action.
