Nepal Opposition Urges PM to Hold Talks with India, China Over Disputed Territories
Nepali Congress-led opposition MPs on Thursday pressed the Balendra Shah government to hold high-level talks with India and China over the disputed territories of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani. The demand was raised at the house of representatives' international relations and tourism committee in Singha Durbar amid fresh unease over India and China using the Lipulekh route for trade and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra without Nepal's consent.
Nepali Congress MP Sandip Rana said Nepal should not delay direct talks with both neighbors, stating that Lipulekh is Nepalese land and is being used for the Kailash Mansarovar journey without permission.
CPN (UML) MP Bhumika Limbu Subba called India's response on Lipulekh irresponsible, while Maoist Centre MP Pramesh Kumar Hamal urged the government to take other political forces into confidence.
The Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent diplomatic notes to India and China after New Delhi announced the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, with India responding that its position was consistent and clear.
The government is expected to respond to the opposition's demands, with further discussions likely to take place in the coming days. The house of representatives' international relations and tourism committee may also schedule additional meetings to discuss the issue.
