A 23-year-old woman died by suicide at her residence in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, May 10, 2026, 45 days after her marriage, allegedly following dowry harassment and her husband's extramarital affairs, according to the police. The deceased, a native of Srikakulam district, had married Roppa Someswara Rao, who runs a ladies' hostel in Visakhapatnam.
The police investigation revealed that the marriage was strained due to Mr. Someswara Rao's alleged extramarital affairs with residents of the hostel, and the woman had confronted him about these relationships, after which he allegedly subjected her to physical and mental torture.
The woman had recently reached out to her parents in Srikakulam to express her distress, and her mother advised her to be patient, suggesting that such adjustments were common in the early stages of a new marriage.
The police have registered a case against Mr. Someswara Rao under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and have taken him into custody, subsequently sending him to remand. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and the police will continue to gather evidence and statements from the victim's family and other witnesses.
The court will likely hear the case in the coming days, and the police will provide further updates on the investigation and any subsequent actions taken against the accused.
