The 45‑acre Hockhockson Farm, dating to 1780, sits on Route 537 in Colts Neck and had been owned by the Cooke family for over two centuries before the Stewarts’ entity, FSP LLC, acquired it.
Before taking over, the Stewarts mapped out a farm‑sanctuary model, partnering with Farm Sanctuary to rescue animals and open an 8,400‑sq‑ft education center. In May 2016 the Monmouth County Agriculture Development Board approved the farm‑related application, clearing the way for township planning approval.
Today, the property grows corn, beans, and heirloom tomatoes while housing rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. A visitors’ center, two cottages, a pond and an equine arena allow the public to learn about sustainable agriculture.
Tracey Stewart, a former veterinary technician, volunteers on the farm and feeds the animals daily, saying the sanctuary gives her childhood farm memories a new purpose.
The Stewarts plan to expand the sanctuary by adding a second barn and a community‑supported agriculture program, with a projected opening for the new education wing slated for early 2025.
