Doctors at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad have performed a successful esophageal reconstruction surgery on a 13-year-old boy who sustained severe corrosive injury to his food pipe after accidentally ingesting a cleaning chemical in December 2024. The patient was referred to NIMS' Department of Surgical Gastroenterology in July 2025 following initial nutritional support via a feeding tube.
Clinical evaluation confirmed extensive narrowing and blockage of the esophagus, requiring a year-long follow-up before definitive surgery under established treatment protocols. The reconstructive procedure, led by NIMS Director and senior surgical professor Dr. N. Bheerappa, involved complex intervention due to the severity of the stricture and the patient's psychological condition.
The surgery was carried out at a cost of ₹5 lakh, fully covered under the Aarogyasri Scheme with additional support from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). The patient has recovered well and is now able to consume a soft diet without difficulty.
Hospital authorities stated the case underscores the long-term management challenges of corrosive ingestions in children, and NIMS will continue monitoring the patient's progress in follow-up care. The surgical team plans to present the case at the next national conference of the Association of Surgeons of India.
