Karnataka Activates India’s First State-Backed Grievance System for Gig Workers
The Karnataka government operationalized India’s first state-backed grievance redressal mechanism for platform-based gig workers on May 1, 2026, allowing workers to file complaints on pay, terminations, and working conditions through the Integrated Public Grievance Redressal System. The system routes grievances directly to platform-mandated Internal Dispute Resolution Committees under the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Rules notified in March 2026.
Platforms must resolve complaints within 15 working days and issue final orders within 45 days, with workers permitted to escalate unresolved disputes to the Karnataka Gig Workers Welfare Board within 30 days. Eligible grievances include account suspensions, payment withholdings, unfair penalties, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions.
Aggregators including Namma Yatri and Yulu have integrated Internal Dispute Resolution Committee details with the portal, while Amazon and others are completing integration. About 12 platforms have submitted data on 12 lakh active gig workers to the welfare board, although overlaps are expected until unique worker IDs are assigned.
The government will monitor resolution timelines as a 1 percent welfare fee on transactions begins collection from platforms starting July 5, 2026, to fund social security benefits. The cap per transaction varies by service type, with proceeds directed to the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers’ Fund.
