BJP Rules Out Support for Coalition Government in Tamil Nadu
The BJP has announced it will not support any attempts to form a coalition government in Tamil Nadu, where no party or alliance secured a simple majority in the 2026 Assembly election. The party's state president, Nainar Nagenthran, stated that the people of Tamil Nadu had not given the BJP a chance to be part of the government, and the party would continue to raise its voice for the cause of the people.
The BJP, as part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance, contested 27 seats in the election and won only the Udhagamandalam Assembly segment.
Nagenthran clarified that the lone BJP MLA-elect would not vote for any of the formations attempting to form the government, and no party had approached the BJP seeking its support.
The Governor of Tamil Nadu has the power to ask for numbers to form the government, and it is the duty of the single largest party to provide them, according to Nagenthran. The court can be approached if the party is not satisfied with the Governor's decision.
The immediate next steps will involve the Governor's decision on who to invite to form the government, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay potentially being called to form the government as the leader of the single largest party.
