DeMarcus Cousins, a four-time NBA All-Star and Olympic Gold medallist, has urged young Indian basketball players to believe in themselves and create their own confidence through hard work. In an interview on the sidelines of the BUDX NBA House event in New Delhi, Cousins reflected on his own journey and the evolution of the 'Big Man' archetype in basketball.
Cousins noted that the league is now dominated by versatile giants like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid, players who embody the skill set he helped pave the way for. However, he deflected the title of trailblazer, citing players like Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett as inspirations.
Cousins also spoke about the challenges he faced in his career, including a career-altering Achilles tear and an ACL injury, which taught him the importance of humility and trusting his body. He advised young players to understand the business side of the sport, citing his own experience of being traded from Sacramento to New Orleans in 2017.
The NBA legend's message to young Indian players is to focus on building confidence from within and letting their hard work speak for itself. He emphasized the importance of self-belief, saying that confidence built on external validation can be easily crumbled.
The BUDX NBA House event in New Delhi is part of the growing basketball fever in India, with Cousins' visit expected to inspire a new generation of players. The NBA has been actively promoting the sport in India, with various initiatives and events aimed at developing the game at the grassroots level. The court will resume hearing on the growth of basketball in India as the sport continues to gain popularity.
