Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, hours after which he stated his new government had inherited a debt of Rs 10 lakh crore from the previous DMK regime. Speaking after the oath-taking ceremony, Vijay said the state's financial condition was dire and pledged to release a white paper on public finances to ensure transparency, while announcing 200 units of free electricity and new task forces on women's safety and drug control.
DMK president M.K. Stalin responded swiftly, challenging Vijay's claim and asserting that Tamil Nadu's debt remained within statutory limits. He cited ongoing welfare schemes over the past five years despite crises like the pandemic and floods, and accused Vijay of misrepresenting fiscal realities just after assuming office. Stalin questioned how Vijay could make such claims without reviewing the February budget session, where finances were tabled.
Vijay formed the government with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, following a week of political uncertainty. His administration has prioritized education, health, water, and welfare for farmers and fishermen. The government is required to prove its majority in the Assembly through a floor test on or before May 13.
