More than 50 value-added products derived from cashew apple, developed by CSIR-NEERI and CPCRI, have not reached the public due to slow commercialization efforts. Despite years of research and successful pilot batches, widespread distribution remains unrealized.
The products include juices, jams, wines, and dehydrated snacks, intended to boost farmer incomes and reduce post-harvest losses in cashew-growing regions such as Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. Both institutes confirmed the technical readiness of the products, with CPCRI reporting technology transfer to several state agencies.
Officials attribute the delay to gaps in processing infrastructure, marketing support, and private-sector engagement. A senior CSIR official acknowledged the disconnect between innovation and market access during a recent review meeting in New Delhi.
The Ministry of Agriculture plans to discuss scaling mechanisms with state governments and agro-industries at an upcoming meeting next month.
