Dolly Parton’s Legacy Fuels 950 New Registrations, $150,000 in Knox County Donations

The Imagination Library Knox County chapter in Tennessee recorded 950 new child registrations and raised more than $150,000 in donations during August following Dolly Parton's death on 25 August. But the surge was not just a numbers game; it was a communal salute that replaced floral tributes with tangible support, as Parton's family publicly asked fans to honor her memory by funding the charity.

The state of Tennessee matches local contributions dollar‑for‑dollar, so the $150,000 boost translates into $300,000 in total support for the program. Kay Hurst, program manager, said the extra funding will keep the free‑book delivery system running without interruption, especially as the chapter has a yearly target of $288,000 to unlock state matching funds.

Between 25 August and 22 September, a $25,000 donation alone will provide monthly books to more than 1,500 children for a full year. The annual Seeds of Imagination luncheon brought in $109,000, while the first "Give Like Dolly Day" raised $12,000, setting the stage for an annual tradition of community giving.

Parton launched the library in 1995 with a vision that every child receives a book each month until age five. The program now sends over 300 million books worldwide, with more than three million delivered monthly; Penguin Random House has been the sole publishing partner for 27 years.

One parent, Maria Sanchez, says the free books have turned her son from a reluctant reader into a book‑loving child, a change that echoes the library’s original mission. "I see him excited to open a new book every month," Sanchez told local reporters.

With $138,000 still needed to meet the annual target, the chapter has announced a new fundraising drive slated to run through November, aiming to secure the remaining funds before the next state matching cycle. Hurst added that the community’s swift response gives the program confidence that it will stay on course for the coming year.
