The Supreme Court collegium will forward Sunita Agarwal’s name to the President by June 5, 2024, after a formal hearing.
Agarwal, who has served as Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court since January 2023, has a 34‑year legal career that began as an advocate in 1990.
She became an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2011, was made permanent in 2013, and is known for mediating high‑profile disputes.
The bench will then comprise Justice B V Nagarathna, who joined the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021, and Justice Venkita Subramani Mohana, elevated on June 2, 2024.
With Agarwal’s appointment, the Supreme Court will have three women judges for the first time in its 133‑year history, a milestone celebrated by senior advocates and law students.
The President will act on the collegium’s recommendation within 30 days, with the formal oath likely to be taken in late June.
