Security forces in Manipur arrested a resident of Churachandpur district after seizing a 9mm pistol, one magazine, and seven live rounds from his possession, police said on May 9, 2026. The man, identified as an active cadre of the Kuki National Army (Burma), was apprehended in the Zou Veng area on May 8.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called the arrest a serious development, warning that the recovery of sophisticated weapons points to a growing threat from foreign-linked militant groups operating along the Myanmar border. He stated Manipur would not tolerate unlawful activities.
On May 7, armed militants attacked three Naga villages—Namlee, Wanglee, and Choro—in Kamjong district, less than one kilometer from the international border, burning several houses. Assam Rifles responded by deploying troops who evacuated 15 villagers, including women and children, and provided humanitarian assistance. During search operations, one armed man was captured with an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
Assam Rifles stated that ongoing patrolling along the Myanmar border remains critical to maintaining security. The court is expected to hear the cases against the arrested individuals on Monday, while security forces have intensified surveillance in border areas.
