China and the U.S. have jointly dismantled a transnational drug smuggling ring, arresting five suspects and seizing a batch of drugs, including synthetic opioids and sedatives, Chinese authorities announced on Monday. The coordinated operation was conducted in early April by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The operation was carried out in Liaoning and Guangdong provinces in China, as well as Florida and Nevada in the U.S., and successfully cut off a cross-border drug smuggling and trafficking route between the two countries.
The arrested suspects include two Chinese nationals and three U.S. nationals, and the seized drugs include protonitazene and bromazolam.
The joint operation marks a significant achievement in cooperation between the two countries on drug control and comes ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to China from May 13-15, where he is expected to discuss the issue of drug smuggling with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
The U.S. has been demanding that China crack down on the smuggling of synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, which has resulted in the addiction of thousands of American citizens. The Chinese authorities have stated that the successful handling of the case demonstrates the shared determination of the two countries to combat drug-related crimes.
The U.S. President's visit to China is expected to continue the dialogue on cooperation in combating transnational drug smuggling, with further discussions and potential agreements on the horizon. The case will likely be a key topic of discussion during the visit, with both countries looking to build on the success of the joint operation.
