Gaurav Diwan, a loan officer at Yes Bank's Mall Road branch, was shot in the leg Tuesday evening as he tried to defuse a confrontation. Police say a crowd of three to four outsiders entered the premises and began firing. Diwan fired back with his own pistol, one bullet striking his leg before the assailants fled.
The officer was rushed to Amritsar Civil Hospital and treated for a lower leg wound. He survived the attack, but the incident has added to a string of violent events across Punjab in the last 48 hours.
Earlier that day, anti‑drug activist Parwinder Singh Jhota was killed in Mansa after a heated dispute over the sale of intoxicating capsules at a local medical store. The shopkeeper allegedly opened fire, wounding Jhota and two others.
Sunday’s killing of Assistant Sub‑Inspector Iqbal Singh in Naushehra Pannuan by motorcycle‑borne assailants further underscores the spike in targeted shootings. Deputy Inspector General Snehdeep Sharma said the officer was returning home when the attack occurred.
Police are currently investigating the motives behind Diwan’s shooting and the possible link to the other incidents. A police statement said investigators will review CCTV footage and interview witnesses before filing charges.
