India and Trinidad and Tobago signed eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in sectors including tourism, healthcare, infrastructure, and Ayurveda during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to the Caribbean nation on May 8 and 9. The MoUs were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other senior leaders, who held talks with Mr. Jaishankar on expanding bilateral cooperation.
The agreements include the solarisation of Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs building, vector control, infrastructure upgrade of Nelson Island, and the setting up of an Indian Chair on Ayurveda at the University of the West Indies. Mr. Jaishankar also handed over the first batch of 2,000 laptops to selected schoolchildren and inaugurated an agro-processing facility.
The visit covered discussions on cooperation in infrastructure, security, forensics, healthcare, and capacity building, with the two sides reaffirming coordination in regional and multilateral forums. The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit gave 'fresh impetus' to India's ties with Trinidad and Tobago.
The External Affairs Minister concluded his visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, as part of his three-nation tour of Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. The next steps will involve the implementation of the signed MoUs and further cooperation between the two nations, with the Indian government expected to provide updates on the progress of these agreements in the coming weeks.
