Whirlpool India shares fell 4.4% to ₹827.05 after the company clarified that promoter stake sale rumors were unfounded.
The clarification, filed on Thursday with the BSE and NSE, followed a CNBC Awaaz report that Whirlpool Mauritius, holding 39.76% of the Indian arm, was preparing a divestiture.
According to the company’s filing, it is not a party to any negotiations with potential buyers and that the recent communication from Whirlpool Mauritius was not material to its operations.
The shares had surged 20% earlier in the week, but closed down 4.4% at 12:17 pm, trading at ₹827.05 after the clarification; the move underscores the sensitivity of the stock to ownership changes.
Sector analysts note that Whirlpool’s volatility aligns with the broader consumer electronics index, which averages around 3% for the week, suggesting the price swing is within expected bounds for a company facing ownership speculation.
With no forward guidance issued and its Q4 filing due on December 15, investors will focus on the upcoming earnings report for any indications of a shift in the promoter’s stake or the company’s strategic direction.
