Steffan Jones Joins Mumbai Indians, Aims to Cut Bowling Average by 5 Runs
Published: October 24, 2026
Steffan Jones has arrived at Mumbai Indians as bowling consultant, targeting a five‑run drop in the team’s bowling average. The appointment could sharpen MI’s attack as they chase a championship in 2027.
Jones stepped onto the MI turf on Monday, signing a deal that promises a 5‑run reduction in the team’s bowling average — a bold move that could tilt the balance in the 2027 season.
His résumé reads like a play‑book for modern fast bowling: a 14‑year stint in English county cricket, a stint as RR’s high‑performance fast‑bowling coach in 2019, and a re‑hire ahead of IPL 2022. The Welshman also coached Nitish Kumar Reddy, turning a mid‑120s speeder into a consistent mid‑130s threat.
MI’s strategy takes another turn with Kieron Pollard’s appointment as head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene. The new coach’s philosophy dovetails with Jones’s data‑driven approach, and the duo is set to work with Indian youngsters through the domestic season. Meanwhile, the franchise is eyeing a captaincy shake‑up and a possible trade of Hardik Pandya in the coming weeks.
With the 2027 campaign on the horizon, MI’s focus is on building a lethal bowling attack that can outpace rivals. The next test for the new coaching cadre will be the opening fixture against Chennai Super Kings, a match that could set the tone for the entire season.
