Italy's Meloni Denounces Deepfake Photo as Political Attack

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni denounced Tuesday the circulation of a deepfake photo depicting her in lingerie in bed, calling it a political attack using artificial intelligence to fabricate lies. She posted the image on Facebook alongside a critical comment from a user named Roberto to illustrate how manipulated content is being weaponized against her.
"Deepfakes are a dangerous tool because they can deceive, manipulate and target anyone. I can defend myself. Many others cannot," Meloni wrote, warning users against sharing such material without verification. She acknowledged the manipulation made her appear more flattering but said it proved attackers will use any means to lie.
Creating realistic deepfakes has become easier, raising concerns about exploitation and misinformation. It is not the first time Meloni, Italy's first female premier, has faced viral manipulation, after a cherub resembling her appeared in a Roman church in February, which she dismissed with humor.
Meloni did not immediately confirm whether she would report the incident to law enforcement, though commenters on her post urged her to do so. The premier's office has not issued further statements on potential legal action as of Tuesday evening.
