India's Ernakulam District Reports Rise in Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Ernakulam District in India has reported 239 dengue cases, with 78 confirmed cases in April, and a case of malaria was reported from Thrikkakkara on April 25, according to health authorities. Dr. R. Shahirsha, District Medical Officer, Ernakulam, said that although the incidence is lower compared to last year, vigilance remains crucial in preventing these diseases.
Dr. Shahirsha emphasized the importance of source reduction and preventing mosquito breeding sites, as well as observance of the mandatory 'Dry Day' at homes and establishments. He also warned that indoor plants kept in water can become breeding grounds and should be avoided.
Experts, including Dr. Reshmi Ramachandran and Dr. Rajany Jose from the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, noted that migrant laborers are particularly vulnerable to malaria and that consistent field surveillance and control measures are necessary to keep diseases at bay.
The health authorities will continue to monitor the situation and conduct regular screening for malaria among migrant populations, with Dr. Ramachandran stating that addressing the issue is challenging due to the lack of a structured screening process and the difficulty in tracing patients after diagnosis.
