Centre Launches Free Annual Health Check-Up Scheme for Workers Over 40

The Union Labour Ministry launched a nationwide scheme on May 7, 2026, to provide free annual health check-ups for all workers above the age of 40, marking a significant expansion of occupational healthcare and social security in India. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the scheme, stating it would strengthen healthcare access for the country's workforce through early disease detection and treatment.
Under the scheme, health camps will be conducted annually across the country, with identified treatments and medicines provided through Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) facilities. Mandaviya noted that ESIC coverage has grown from around seven crore beneficiaries ten years ago to nearly 15 crore today, with overall social security now reaching approximately 94 crore people.
The Minister cited provisions of the Labour Codes, including equal wages for men and women, extended maternity leave to 26 weeks, work-from-home options, and inclusion of gig workers. He emphasized that the government is addressing long-standing gaps in worker welfare with structured, inclusive policies.
The nationwide health check-up initiative will be implemented in coordination with ESIC and state authorities, with monitoring mechanisms to ensure reach and effectiveness. The government will review progress in six months, with the next assessment scheduled for November 2026.
