Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, on Saturday appealed to all opposition parties in the state to come together and form a joint platform to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which recently won the assembly elections. The BJP's first government in the state was sworn in on the same day, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as the Chief Minister.
Banerjee claimed that atrocities were being committed against Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters across the state, and called upon national parties, student unions, and NGOs to unite against the BJP.
The TMC chief stated that she will talk to any political party willing to hold a dialogue with her, and expressed gratitude to opposition leaders who contacted her after the election results were declared.
The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the TMC secured 80 seats, with Banerjee's party set to become the main opposition in the West Bengal assembly.
The immediate next steps include the TMC starting its new journey as the main opposition, with Banerjee claiming that the party's wrongful defeat will be proven in the future. The West Bengal assembly is expected to resume its proceedings soon, with the opposition parties likely to raise issues of atrocities and security concerns.
