Mamata Banerjee Declares She Will Not Resign, Threatens to Be Dismissed

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced today that she will not resign and will accept dismissal, calling it a "black day" for her party.
Banerjee said her Trinamool Congress will file a lawsuit against the post‑poll violence that has continued since April 29 and warned that a disciplinary committee will sanction any party leader who speaks against the party publicly.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari denied that post‑poll violence is occurring, stating that incidents are sporadic and less than in 2021, and pledged strong action against any offenders.
Banerjee’s refusal follows her accusations that the Election Commission played "nasty games" and blamed the panel for her electoral loss; she also highlighted defeats for non‑BJP alliances in other states.
The Governor can technically dismiss the chief minister, a step that could be taken before the Bengal Assembly dissolves on May 7, when the current term ends. The immediate next step will be whether the Governor acts on the situation or maintains the status quo until the assembly convenes.
