Commuters Face Difficulties at Ernakulam Railway Stations Amid Ongoing Redevelopment
Commuters are facing difficulties in accessing facilities at Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town railway stations in India due to ongoing redevelopment works, with passenger associations demanding that the Railways streamline traffic and ensure pedestrian safety. The ₹450-crore redevelopment project, which began in 2023, is expected to be completed by August 2025.
The chaotic situation has led to concerns over commuter safety, particularly with the monsoon season approaching, according to Liyons J., general secretary of 'Friends on Rails', a passenger association.
Railway sources have assured that steps will be taken to ensure a streamlined flow of vehicles and safe transit of commuters on the premises of the two stations, including scaling down barricaded areas and augmenting lighting once critical structural works are completed.
The issue has been highlighted by a recent incident where a young woman died while attempting to board a train from a low-lying platform, with calls to raise the platform to the standard height. The height of the fifth platform is expected to be increased once platforms two and three are raised.
The railway authorities are expected to take immediate action to address the concerns, with further announcements expected in the coming days. The court of public opinion will closely watch the developments, and commuters will hope for a safer and more convenient travel experience soon.
