Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police have booked 488 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during coordinated enforcement operations conducted on May 8 and 9, 2026. The crackdown, targeting drunk driving, saw 351 cases registered by Hyderabad Traffic Police and 137 by Cyberabad Traffic Police.
In Hyderabad, 292 of those booked were two-wheeler riders, 30 operated three-wheelers, and 29 were driving four-wheelers or other vehicles. Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels ranged from 30 mg to over 300 mg per 100 ml, with 69 offenders recording levels between 30 and 50 mg and five exceeding 300 mg. In Cyberabad, 113 offenders were on two-wheelers, five on three-wheelers, 18 on four-wheelers, and one on a heavy vehicle, with BAC levels reaching up to 550 mg per 100 ml.
All 488 offenders will be produced before judicial authorities. Cyberabad police stated that drivers under the influence who cause fatal accidents will be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which prescribes a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.
Last week, Cyberabad courts disposed of 198 drunk driving cases, sentencing four to fines and jail terms, four to fines plus social service, and releasing 190 upon payment of fines. Police reiterated zero tolerance for such violations and announced continued special enforcement drives across both jurisdictions.
Motorists have been warned against driving after alcohol consumption, and police affirmed that enforcement will remain strict and ongoing.
