Cardinal Anthony Poola has been named chairperson of the newly formed National Federation of Churches in India (NFCI), which brings together 45 senior Church leaders from across the country. The NFCI was announced on Monday by Archbishop Joseph D’Souza, who will serve as one of the convenors along with Archbishop Joseph Kallarangatt and Rev. Vincent Vinod Kumar.
The formation of the NFCI comes at a time when the Christian community is facing increasing systemic challenges and targeted attacks, including stringent anti-conversion laws enacted in several states. Archbishop D’Souza stated that these laws have effectively criminalized core Christian practices, such as house prayer meetings and praying for the sick.
The NFCI aims to provide a unified voice for the Christian community, mobilize resources, and protect their right to practice and propagate their faith as guaranteed by the Constitution of India. The federation will enable the community to address challenges collectively, rather than in isolation.
The immediate next steps for the NFCI include mobilizing resources and preparing to address the systemic challenges faced by the Christian community. The federation is expected to play a crucial role in protecting the constitutional rights of Christians in India.
