Thousands in Telangana Await Completion of Promised 2BHK Houses as Construction Stalls

Thousands of beneficiaries in Telangana are still waiting for completion of government-allotted 2BHK houses, four years after initial allocation, as construction remains stalled across multiple districts. The scheme, launched in October 2015 by the then-BRS government, aimed to provide fully subsidised housing to the urban and rural poor, with 2,92,938 units sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹19,423 crore.
As of April, over 1.62 lakh houses have been completed except for basic infrastructure, while 35,000 units are in final construction stages and another 33,000 under active work, according to Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. Administrative sanctions remain pending for 61,732 additional units, and 1,46,366 beneficiaries have been allotted homes statewide, including 66,150 within GHMC limits.
At the same time, thousands of already completed flats on Hyderabad’s outskirts remain unoccupied due to their distance from workplaces and essential services. The Telangana Housing Corporation has issued notices to vacant flat owners, warning of cancellation and re-allotment if unexplained. In colonies like Kollur I, II, and III, only about 50% of 19,656 flats are occupied, with many beneficiaries visiting only on weekends.
The Congress government is concurrently implementing the Indiramma Housing Scheme, offering ₹5 lakh assistance to EWS families for self-construction on owned land. Officials say the 2BHK programme's remaining units will be expedited, with the next progress review scheduled for mid-June.
