India Urges Canada to Act Against Anti-India Extremist Elements

India on Thursday called upon Canada to act against 'anti-India extremist elements' operating from Canadian soil, following a Canadian intelligence report that highlighted the national security threat posed by Khalistani elements. The report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) noted that Canada-based Khalistani extremist groups continue to pose a national security threat to both India and Canada.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said India has consistently spoken out about concerns regarding the use of Canadian territory as a 'safe haven' by extremist and separatist elements.
Jaiswal emphasized that the CSIS assessment acknowledges the presence of supporters of the Khalistan separatist movement in Canada and notes that such elements 'misuse democratic freedoms and institutions to promote extremism and raise funds that are diverted towards violent activities'.
The MEA spokesperson also responded to the CSIS report mentioning India, alongside China, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan, among the 'main perpetrators of foreign interference and espionage against Canada', stating that India categorically rejects such 'baseless imputations'.
The Canadian government is expected to review the CSIS report and consider India's call to action, with further discussions likely to take place between the two nations in the coming weeks.
