Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a special envoy on global finance, a move aimed at strengthening the UK’s global financial partnerships. Brown will advise on international financial cooperation and support efforts linked to economic security and defence investment in a part-time, unpaid role.
Reacting to the appointment, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage criticized Starmer, saying Labour is doomed with an unpopular leader who lost a general election now seen as the saviour.
The appointment comes after Labour suffered significant losses in the 2026 local elections, losing more than 1,300 council seats across England, including key areas such as Manchester, Salford, Wigan, and Oldham.
In addition to Brown’s appointment, Starmer has also appointed former deputy leader Harriet Harman as adviser on women and girls as part of a broader effort to reset his government after the election setback. The party faces internal criticism and renewed scrutiny of Starmer’s leadership despite public backing from senior ministers.
The court of public opinion will continue to weigh in on these developments, with the next steps likely to include further reactions from political opponents and allies alike, as the UK political landscape continues to evolve following the local election results.
