Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, following the BJP's decisive win in the state assembly elections, where it captured 207 of 294 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders attended the ceremony in Kolkata, where five leaders, including Agnimitra Paul, Dilip Ghosh, and Nisith Pramanik, were inducted as Cabinet ministers.
Agnimitra Paul, a former fashion designer turned politician, stated in an interview that the election outcome reflected public rejection of personality worship in governance. 'The people of Bengal have given their mandate, and Mamata Banerjee should realise she is not above the law... she is not God,' Paul said, referring to adulatory references to Banerjee by Trinamool Congress leaders. The TMC won 80 seats in the poll.
Paul said restoring law and order, depoliticizing the police, improving infrastructure, and creating jobs would be top priorities for the new government. She defended Adhikari's selection as chief minister, citing his three decades of political experience. The court will hear the first official policy announcements during the upcoming assembly session.
