Bangladesh Seeks Chinese Support for Teesta River Restoration
Published: May 7, 2026
The Bangladesh government has requested Chinese involvement in the Teesta River restoration project, a move with potential diplomatic ramifications for India, as the long-pending Teesta water-sharing treaty with Dhaka remains unimplemented. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed Beijing's readiness to support Bangladesh's development initiatives, including in water management.
Bangladesh has formally sought Chinese support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, requesting technical and financial involvement from Beijing to dredge, embank, and manage the transboundary river. The request was made during a meeting in Dhaka between Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday.
