TVK chief Vijay is set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 after securing the required majority support from regional parties. Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar and staked claim to form the government with the support of CPI, CPIM, VCK, and IUML.
Vijay's TVK emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with 108 seats but fell short of an absolute majority. However, after securing the support of regional parties, Vijay has been able to take his total tally to 121, exceeding the required majority mark of 118.
The support of CPI, CPIM, VCK, and IUML has paved the way for the formation of a TVK-led government in the state. VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan and IUML leaders SSB Syed Farooq Basha and AM Shahjahan have extended their unconditional support to TVK.
The Governor has agreed to meet Vijay after initially denying a meeting due to a scheduled visit to Kerala. Vijay is expected to meet the Governor with all the letters of support he has received. The court is not involved in this matter, but the Governor will play a crucial role in the oath-taking ceremony.
The immediate next step is Vijay's oath-taking ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on May 10. After taking the oath, Vijay will become the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to head a government in Tamil Nadu since 1967.
