Chandrasekar Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, marking the end of a six-decade dominance by the DMK and AIADMK in the state's politics. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president claimed a majority with the backing of 120 MLAs, including support from Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI, CPI-M, and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), after being elected from two constituencies and opting to retain one seat.
Vijay's party won 108 of the 234 assembly seats in the recent elections, falling short of the 118 majority mark. He submitted letters of support from coalition partners to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday, confirming the alliance. The swearing-in ceremony, held at 10 a.m., was attended by senior leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
This marks a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, where Vijay, a former film actor, transitions into full-time governance after a rapid rise in politics. The new administration is expected to announce its cabinet and policy priorities in the coming week as assembly proceedings approach.
