Kerala CM Selection Hangs in Balance as Congress High Command Weighs Options

The Congress party's selection of a Chief Minister for Kerala remains uncertain, with Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala as the top contenders. The party's High Command is scheduled to make the announcement on Sunday, following a meeting with the leaders in Delhi on Saturday.
The situation has been complicated by the accidental disclosure of a document purportedly showing a list of Congress MLAs backing Mr. Venugopal, which was denied by AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, who was reportedly backing Mr. Venugopal, stated that numbers are crucial in parliamentary politics, amid reports that a majority of Congress MLAs have backed Mr. Venugopal.
The party's MLA-designate from Uduma, N. Neelakantan, complained that his choice for the Chief Minister's post was incorrectly recorded as neutral, triggering social media insinuations of attempts to stack the odds in Mr. Venugopal's favour.
The Congress High Command's decision is expected to be announced on Sunday, and the party's leaders are set to meet in Delhi for discussions on Saturday. The outcome of the selection process is likely to have significant implications for the party and its allies in the state.
