Bengaluru Police said on Friday that Ranjith Kumar Gupta was arrested after strangling his wife, Gunja Madeshia, and then pouring hot oil over her body in a flat in Bilekahalli, a suburb under Mico Layout police jurisdiction.
The couple, hailing from Bihar, were reportedly in a heated argument while their two children played outside. The altercation escalated when Gupta allegedly strangled Gunja, after which he fled the scene.
Police recovered the body in a severely damaged condition, noting the hot oil had scorched the skin and that Gupta had tried to peel it off. He also reportedly attempted suicide later that evening, though authorities say the attempt was unsuccessful.
Bengaluru Police have registered an FIR and are probing the motive behind the violence, while questioning surrounding witnesses and the accused. The case has prompted heightened security in the Bilekahalli area.
A neighbor, who has requested anonymity, told reporters that the two little children were left shocked, and a local resident said they rallied to ensure the children were taken to a safe house.
